Things To Do in Portland When it is Winter Outside

A Beautiful Winter

Don’t let winter stop you from having a wonderful time while visiting Portland. Open your eyes instead to one of the most gorgeous winters in all of the United States.

Having a location at the junction of the Columbia and Willamette rivers, allows the city boasts a near perfect winter climate, offering the beauty of a white Christmas without the bitter chill.

The snow should never keep you from having fun in Portland . Here are a few activities that can both entertain and keep you warm.

Go for a Walk

One of the many wonderful things about Portland is the almost endless list of locations within easy walking distance. Throw on your favorite winter ensemble – jacket, hat, and scarf, then head to one of the many quaint coffee shops that line nearly every avenue.

Sit and sip your favorite hot beverage while enjoying the company of the locals. Delight in people watching as crowds drift past your window seat, dodging snowflakes and blowing steam from the capital O’s of their open mouths.

Go for a ride

Among other things, Portland is recognized for outstanding public transportation. If you elect to leave the warmth for the outside wintry air, you can tool around on Max (the city’s light rail) or take a ride on buses that are always on schedule.

Locals know that whenever it snows in Portland, the bus is crowded with newbies. This is a good thing. The more people crammed inside, the warmer you will be as you watch the snowflakes pile onto the ground outside.

Avoid Driving!

I repeat, if it is icy or snowy outside, do not drive! Those who live in the midwest may laugh at this advice, but if you are not used to driving in icy or snowy conditions, you should practice only when necessary.

The city of Portland does not maintain a large snowplow crew, and roads are often thick from buildup. Portland also has its fair share of hills. There are not nearly as many as San Francisco, of course, but there are a multitude of little ones in the city’s intersections and driveways, as well as a few big hills that are dotted around the city.

You can be the best snow driver in the world, but you can never out maneuver the laws of physics. Do not drive unless you have to.

Bottom line, Portland is gorgeous. Take every opportunity to see the beautiful sites. Even if you are simply bundled up by a window, watching the world go by, there are plenty of things to do in Portland.
