Flying with Kids
Taking children to Portland International Airport

I just returned home from Alex’s second trip to Reno to see his grandparents. He is five months old and has already been on an airplane four times. With family eager to see him regularly in Reno, I am certain that he will travel there a lot more.
Lucky for me, Alex can fly free on my lap until he is two years old, which suits him fine. There is also the option of purchasing a seat and using a child’s car seat on the plane for safer travel, but Alex would probably sit on my lap anyway even if I did buy him a ticket. For those who bring their children on their lap, the car seat can fly as a piece of baggage. Car seats can also be rented with a vehicle at the destination, but this gets pretty expensive for longer trips. I am lucky since my parents have a car seat in Reno for me to use when I visit.
The airlines require proof of a child’s age if they are flying free. A copy of the child’s birth certificate is recommended. We nearly did not make it home on our first trip with Alex since we did not have any documentation with us (no one had asked on the way out of Portland).

The Portland International Airport has a great play area for children near the end of Concourse C, past Hudson News. The play area has things to crawl on and play with as well as a TV which plays cartoons and kid friendly programming. Alex is a bit young still for any of the play equipment, but he still liked looking around. Additional play areas are located pre-security and near the D/E security checkpoint.

I have also seen children playing on the 3D map of the Willamette Valley which includes golden rivers and sculpted mountains that are used as benches.

A toy store, Creative Kid Stuff, is also located on Concourse C. The store has fun and unique toys for children up to age 12. Laurelwood Brewing Company, located on Concourse A and E, has toys available for children dining at the restaurant.

The Airport might not be as fun a place for kids as Inflatable Kingdom, but it sure is great that there are things for children to do there while we wait for our flights at the airport. Whether you live in Portland or are just here to visit, be sure to bring the kids by Inflatable Kingdom for an open play session some time. It’s worth the trip.
