Looking for a short drive to the beach, fresh produce and lots of family fun? Sauvie Island is a great place to visit!

For the nature lover, 12,000 acres of land have been preserved on the island for wildlife. The public can visit the preserve mid April through September. The land is open to hunters only by permit during the winter months. Sauvie Island a great place to go for hiking, bird watching, fishing, and hunting. A day use permit is required for parking, which costs $3.50. Annual permits are also available. Permits can be purchased at Sam’s Market (Cracker Barrel Grocery) located at the foot of the Sauvie Island bridge or the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Portland Headquarters.

Beach lovers will enjoy Sauvie Island’s extensive beaches along the Columbia River. The public beaches are open year round. They provide lots of great wading and sandcastle building opportunities. When traveling by car, a parking permit is required to visit the beaches. There are no lifeguards, so be sure to play safe in the water.

Sauvie Island is known for its fresh produce. There are lots of U-Pick options for items such as fruit, berries, flowers and pumpkins. The local farms also sell produce in the two farm stores on the island: Krugers Farm and the Pumpkin Patch. Availability of produce is seasonal and the stores are closed in the winter.

Sauvie Island has lots of fun seasonal activities and is a great place to go in the fall. Children enjoy picking their own pumpkin, then the family can find their way through one of the corn mazes on the island. Petting zoos, hayrides and more complete the fun.
