Three Outdoor Activities in Portland You Won’t Want To Miss
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or are a current resident, finding outdoor activities in Portland may be your main goal as the warm weather creeps into the region. Instead of staying inside all Spring and Summer, why not get outdoors and fully engage in the beauty Portland’s scenery has to offer those living and visiting the great city?
Oregon Zoo
What person doesn’t enjoy a day spent walking through a zoo? With hundreds of unique animals to visit and beautiful pathways to wander along, the Oregon Zoo is a one of the best outdoor activities in Portland to consider this year. Open since the late 1800’s, the zoo has always been a leading voice in promoting conservation and better futures for wildlife.
Those who visit can take the zoo train around the zoo, listening to the history behind the facility and learning all about the Earth-friendly habits the zoo encourages. Throughout the zoo’s gardens, visitors can view and learn about special plants. The Oregon Zoo is certainly an ideal way to spend family time together.
Portland Classical Chinese Garden
For those interested in indulging in the beauty Portland can offer, the Portland Classical Chinese Garden is a great place to stop for enjoyment. Admission to this garden gets visitors access to the Garden, Teahouse and public tours and exhibits (when offered). The Portland Classical Chinese Garden was first dreamt of in the early 1980’s.
When Suzhou, China became the city’s sister city in 1988 the idea became more focused and the goal of building a Suzhou-style garden in Portland was put into reality. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the garden, year-round. The authentically built Ming Dynasty style Scholar’s garden offers covered walkways, bridges, open colonnades, pavilions and beautiful landscapes. Guided tours are available each day at noon and 1:00pm, however the ticked booth offers a self-guided audio tour throughout the rest of the day.
The Vietnam Memorial
While children may not fully appreciate the sentiment behind this outdoor activity in Portland, adults can fully engage in the both the beauty and meaning behind The Vietnam Memorial in the city. A quiet reflective park, the memorial is a great place to visit when calmness is what you crave. The park officially honors the men and women who died or are still reported missing from the Vietnam War. It was inspired by the park in Washington, D.C. and remains a memorable part of Portland.
Outdoor activities in Portland can range from trips to the Portland Zoo to sitting quietly in The Vietnam Memorial park. The beauty of the city shines bright through each outdoor option and provides great fun for families living or visiting the great city of Portland.
