It felt like summer yesterday. The sun was out and it was gorgeous outside. We played soccer with Alex in the front yard. Sometimes the ball rolls into the flower bed and breaks a flower off, but I just cut those flowers and stick them in a vase in the house.
After he finished playing soccer, we took Alex out on a tricycle ride around the block. My husband Brian and I took turns pushing Alex and walking the dogs. Alex can pedal pretty well now as long as we are going downhill or at least on a flat surface. When the road has an uphill slant, he still needs a little help. He also gets a bit tired by the end of the walk. It gets pretty uncomfortable bending down to push the trike, but when Brian and I take turns, it makes it easier. We probably should make or buy some sort of a handle to push it with…. I have seen a handle in the One Step Ahead catalog that might work.
We had a great time outside in the sun, but the house was pretty warm by the evening. We have air conditioning, but my husband, Brian, had unplugged it because he wanted to do some work on it before we ran it this year. Warm evenings really make me miss Reno where the weather cools down substantially at night. Here the humidity keeps things pretty warm in the evening.
Alex had napped in the afternoon, but it was hard to get him to go to sleep because he was so warm. Alex tends to stay warmer than me and even though I was not too uncomfortable, the poor kid was soaked in sweat. When we went to bed at night the house had gotten even warmer.
Needless to say, Alex was hot. I did not think it would be that big of a problem, but the poor kid could not sleep. He would settle down, then wine and cry. He kept finding reasons he wanted to get out of bed, which I mostly discouraged. We all got more and more tired. It was one of those nights when I really wished that Alex slept in his own bed. I suggested to Brian that he go to the other room and sleep on the couch, so he could at least get some sleep, but he stayed in bed with us so we all were kept awake, hot, and exhausted.
Finally around midnight Brian got up and plugged in the air conditioner. The house cooled off quick and soon we were all asleep. So it just took us a few hours to decide it was important enough to fix the problem.
I am very thankful we have air conditioning in our house. When I was growing up, we did not have air conditioning. I had an attic room that was impossible to sleep in during the summer until it had a chance to cool off (usually between midnight and 3 am). There were plenty of nights I slept on the couch since my room was just too hot. Luckily I did not have to sleep in the attic very often as we had a ranch we spent most of the summers. My bedroom at the ranch was in the basement and stayed nice and cool all of the time regardless of the weather. Basements are great in the summer. If we did not have air conditioning in our house here, we’d probably move down to the basement whenever it got warm and sleep in the guest room.
The weather sure is unpredictable around Portland. After such a warm day yesterday it has cooled off quite a bit today. Inflatable Kingdom is a great place to go when the weather is too hot or too cold to enjoy playing outside or if you just need to have things be predictable. Come on by for an Open Play session some time, let the kids burn some energy while you relax in a nice comfortable space.
